WebJan 16, 2024 · A clerestory (generally pronounced “clear-story”) is a row of windows placed high above eye level and often just under the ceiling or roof line. Clerestories have been a part of the architecture of large buildings for centuries, and are often used to bring in extra light into huge churches. Webclerestory or clearstoryboth: klĭr´stōr˝ē, –stôr˝ē [ key], a part of a building whose walls rise higher than the roofs of adjoining parts of the structure. Pierced by windows, it is chiefly a device for obtaining extra light. It had an early use in certain Egyptian temples, as at Karnak, and was used later in the great halls of Roman basilicas.
